Elder abuse is a universal phenomenon. Interventions are being developed and implemented around the world, but they are not well known, let alone evaluated. The aim of this review is to summarise the literature on interventions to combat elder abuse in African countries and to understand the reasons for the relative scarcity of published studies. The review identified 41 publications in French and English from several databases, including Medline, AgeLine, Health Policy Reference Centre, CINAHL Complete, ERIC, Political Science Complete and Psychology and Behavioural Sciences Collection. Knowledge about elder abuse is limited, fragmented and unevenly distributed geographically and linguistically. The results suggest that interventions to combat elder abuse are ignored and overlooked in the African agenda.
