Quality of the caregiver-patient relationship at the Fada N’Gourma Hospital Center in Burkina Faso

In a context where healthcare is free for children under five, the increased use of pediatric services presents challenges for the quality of the caregiver-patient relationship. Our study aims to describe the perceptions of parents of children aged 0 to 5 years who were hospitalized in the pediatrics department of the Fada N’Gourma Regional Hospital Center regarding their interactions with the health staff. This study was conducted using a qualitative, descriptive phenomenological design. We employed a purposive sampling method to select thirteen (13) parents of children, including eight (08) female and five (05) male participants. The youngest participant was 21 years old, while the oldest was 70. The techniques used were semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and document review, utilizing corresponding tools. The results show that the interactions between the parents and the caregiving staff are perceived positively regarding responsiveness to requests and continuity of care. Sources of dissatisfaction include the non-involvement of parents in therapeutic choices and the presence of corrupt practices. This study made it possible to draw lessons on caregiver-patient communication as experienced through the parents of hospitalized children. Best practices can be capitalized upon, and shortcomings can be improved to enhance the quality of care.
