Healthcare workers' beliefs about Covid-19 vaccination

Abstract

This study explores healthcare workers’s beliefs about vaccination against Covid-19. 

It is qualitative and focuses on the influences that shape attitudes towards the vaccine through the prism of the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB). This theory states that behavioural, normative and control beliefs influence behaviour. Data were collected using a questionnaire structured around these three beliefs, which underpin the adoption of a health behaviour such as vaccination against Covid-19 in this study. Data analysis shows that most respondents recognised the benefits of the vaccine, such as herd immunity and prevention of severe forms of the disease. However, 18.94% remained sceptical. Some expressed fears about side-effects or efficacy. Health workers and the family influence acceptance of the vaccine, underlining the importance of social and professional networks in promoting the vaccine. The data reveals that 68.29% of people disapprove of vaccination, often due to a lack of reliable information. Factors facilitating adoption of the vaccine by healthcare workers include personal protection. However, doubts about efficacy and fear of side effects remain major obstacles. The study concludes that to improve uptake of vac-cin, it is crucial to strengthen scientific communication, combat misinformation and reassure people about the safety and efficacy of vaccines.
