Reproductive health of adolescent girls in the Democratic Republic of Congo: Family perceptions and analysis of educational interventions in the Oicha health zone

In many African cultures, adolescent sexual health remains a taboo subject due to restrictive social norms. This context limits access to education and care, spreads misinformation, and neglects adolescents' needs. Understanding the perceptions of adolescent girls and their families about reproductive health interventions based on their traditions, practices, and customs in order to improve their acceptability required an exploratory approach using an ethnographic method. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 adolescent girls and their families in the Oicha health zone, selected through purposive sampling. Qualitative data were analyzed using ATLAS.ti software. The results highlight educational interventions on infectious disease prevention, family planning awareness, and menstrual health education, from both formal and informal sources. Participants perceived these interventions along two dimensions: their potential impact on adolescent girls' behaviors and their compatibility with local cultural values. The expectations expressed include improved reproductive health education and information, increased accessibility to health services, and the tailoring of interventions to local needs. These findings highlight the importance of developing a holistic educational program that addresses the specific needs of adolescent girls and their families, while respecting the sociocultural context. Such a program could improve the acceptability and effectiveness of reproductive health interventions in similar settings.
