Acceptance of malaria vaccination among mothers of children aged 0 to 24 months in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, in 2023

Abstract

The World Health Organization recommended the introduction of malaria vaccine into routine immunization in 2022. Côte d'Ivoire plans to introduce malaria vaccine into the EPI in 2024. The objective of our study was to determine the acceptance of malaria vaccine. We conducted a cross-sectional survey in two health districts of Abidjan. Data were collected in vaccination centers during a direct interview with mothers of children aged 0 to 24 months. Vaccination intention was calculated by dividing the number of positive responses by the total number of respondents. Factors associated with malaria vaccination intention were identified by performing a multivariate analysis by logistic regression. The measure of association was the adjusted Odds Ratio with a 95% confidence interval. Data were analyzed using PASW Statistics 18 software. A total of 617 mothers were surveyed. Vaccination intention was 96%. There was a relationship between malaria vaccination intention and education level (Fisher exact test = 12.93; p = 0.003). On multivariate analysis, the association between education level and malaria vaccination intention was not statistically significant (ORaj = 1.66; 95% CI: 0.64 – 4.28). Malaria vaccine acceptance is high among mothers of children aged 0 to 24 months.
