Représentations sociales incorporées et innovations durables d’étuvage du riz paddy au Bénin

How can we explain that certain innovations are easily applied and sustainable while others struggle to be disseminated despite considerable investments? Based on the analysis of a research and development initiative, this article reports on the experience of developing improved rice parboiling technologies. Data collection and analysis methods include ex-post reconstruction and monitoring including documentary analysis and interviews with researchers and steamers. The results showed that the developed MRT technology includes equipment with socialized value for parboilers. Also, ideas and knowledge drawn from culinary crafts are incorporated during the final shaping of the improved devices. These incorporated social representations have considerably improved the productivity of the device and the quality of the parboiled rice. The evidence also reveals negotiation facilitation and flexibility as two intermediation processes that enabled the incorporation of ideas and knowledge including local norms and values. It is therefore possible to conclude that the “without fanfare” large-scale dissemination of improved rice parboiling technologies is partly explained by the taking into account and valorization of local ideas and knowledge. These constitute what is described as political supports for sustainable innovations put to the test by the facilitation of negotiations and flexibility. The analysis in this article motivates the consideration of political supports and intermediation processes driven by targets for better dissemination of technological innovations developed in research laboratories.
