Powers of civil society in human rights

Civil society did not emerge in the 20th century. The idea of organizing to help the poor, the sick, and foreigners has long existed in various cultures. But CSOs have proliferated and gained visibility with economic globalization and the development of transportation, communication, and information technologies. For a long time, the contribution of development aid associations supported the socio-economic development of African states. However, with the major upheavals on the international stage since the end of the Cold War, in addition to their contribution to socio-economic development, CSOs were now expected, within the framework of the new world order, to promote the strengthening of democracy and good governance. Some civil society organizations, long active in social work, are gradually moving into the political sphere. Intended to constitute a counterweight to "patrimonial" states, their relationships with these states can now prove complex.
