Periodontal diseases, major causes of tooth loss, are very common. They affect nearly 10% of the world population. The objective of this study was to describe the socio-economic determinants and the demand for periodontal care at the Institute of Odontology and Stomatology (IOS) in Dakar. This was a descriptive and retrospective study conducted among patients who were consulted at the periodontology department of the Odontology Clinic in Dakar. Data were collected from medical records from October 14, 2019 to March 28, 2020. The tools used to collect and process the information were the Sphinx software and the Excel spreadsheet. The results showed that of the 452 patient files, 62% were male and 65% were between 20 and 40 years old. More than half (53%) of the patients lived less than 5 km from the health care facility and 72% of the patients had a monthly income of less than 100,000 FCFA. The epidemiological profile shows that gingivitis (61%) followed by periodontitis (35%) were the most diagnosed pathologies. Nearly 45% of patients came for a functional reason. Proximity to health facilities, income, and cost of treatment are factors that influence accessibility to oral health care. It is important to integrate the profile of the health care consumer into the overall care.
