Factors contributing to the low demand for HIV/AIDS testing among the population of Korhogo (Ivory Coast)

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the factors contributing to the low demand for HIV/AIDS testing among the Poro population in general, and particularly among young men in the municipality of Korhogo, Côte d'Ivoire. Its goal was to provide relevant and reliable information to support the development of communication strategies for behavior change. To achieve this, a qualitative socio-anthropological approach was employed, consisting of two data collection tools: focus groups and individual interviews. The study took place from June 24 to July 7, 2018, in the municipality of Korhogo. It involved 99 individuals selected using purposive sampling based on sex (women and men), neighborhood, and age group (15-19; 20-34; 35-49; over 50). The significant results showed that adolescents (15-19 years old) and young adults (20-34 years old) are aware of the existence of HIV/AIDS and its correlation with tuberculosis. However, due to denial and, above all, fear of HIV/AIDS, they have come to believe it is an invention of "white people" for profit. In contrast, adults (35-49 years old) and the elderly (50 years and older) are informed about HIV/AIDS, but the persistence of belief in witchcraft revealed a lack of information about this scourge among this target population in Korhogo. The study also revealed that factors contributing to the refusal of HIV/AIDS testing included: ignorance of the test's existence, fear of a positive result (equated with death), beliefs related to protection against "evil, including illness" through the wearing of amulets, rings, and charms, the practice of ritual baths, and the use of a variety of traditional therapies.
