Depression is one of the common postpartum complications. It can have a negative impact on the development of the child and on the mother-child relationship, yet it is often misunderstood and trivialized by health professionals. The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of postpartum depression and to identify the associated factors.
This is a prospective descriptive cross-sectional study in two evaluation stages, on the 3rd day postpartum (T1) then on the 4th week postpartum (T2). We used the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale French version to screen for postpartum depression.
In T1, 14.5% of the study population had depressive symptoms. In T2, the prevalence of postpartum depression was 10.7%. Several factors have been associated with the occurrence of postpartum depression, age, marital status, unwanted pregnancy, postpartum, gestality, sex of the baby, number of children to charge, the presence of a psychiatric and medical-surgical history, the fact of being unwanted by one's parents and of having lived with an adoptive family and the absence of family support.
Postpartum depression is a reality in the Tuléaroise population. Several factors contribute to the occurrence of this disorder. Health personnel should systematically screen for subjects at risk before the onset of this disorder.
