Car garages and their impact on the environment and living conditions of the population in Riviéra Faya (Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire).

Abstract

Faya, a peripheral district of the town of Cocody, is experiencing anarchic installation of mechanical garage activities. Indeed, this mechanical sector, which constitutes a workforce to maintain and repair vehicles, uses the streets and corridors of the neighborhood to carry out its activity. The objective of this work is to contribute to a better understanding of the effects of these facilities on the environment and living conditions of the local population in Faya. To achieve this objective, the research was based on a methodology consisting of documentation and field surveys (inventory, observation and questionnaire surveys). The results of the analysis reveal that the Riviéra Faya neighborhood is home to many mechanical garages that provide services (general mechanics, air conditioning, electricity, sheet metal work, etc.). The actors of these activities have various profiles. Beyond the services offered to motorists, these installations are not subject to any regulations on Classified Installations for the Protection of the Environment and consequently present nuisances or risks with regard to the environment of the district, the health and public safety of the neighborhood.
