In fish holes: social representations and co-construction of climate change resilient innovations

The Ouémé valley in the south-east of Benin is an area of great agricultural and fish production. The agro-fish farmers collect fish in holes commonly known as whédos and ahlͻ. Over the past two decades, it is observed a considerable decrease in the quantities of fish collected due to the perverse effects of climatic changes such as floods and droughts. To reverse this worrying trend, various initiatives are being implemented. This article reconstructs an experience of co-development of resilient innovations led by agro-fish farmers. It is based on the comprehensive analysis of critical events emerged from interviews with actors involved in advisory support. The results show that two climate-resilient innovations are being promoted: net belts and happas. These innovations are developed by incorporating social representations comparable to traditional fish farming techniques in acadja. Therefore, it is suggested that the mechanisms that facilitated such an incorporation should lead climate change adaptation interventions.
